Nicki's Picks - New and Noteworthy Titles

YBP Library Services is pleased to introduce a new and valuable resource to Academia. Due to Baker & Taylor's acquisition in September of J.A. Majors Company, YBP is fortunate to be able to continue a monthly title list series of medical books originally compiled for Majors, called "Nicki's Picks." We will be presenting a new Nicki's Picks list in Academia each month, starting in January 2005.
Titles considered for Nicki's Picks are new editions of previously published texts, major new texts in clinical subject categories, monographs in current research efforts, and texts in emerging biomedical fields. Allied Health, Nursing, and Medical categories are included. Nicki examines the actual material for the reputation of the author and publisher, comparative cost with competitive titles, unique features of the book, audience level, and usefulness of bibliographies and references. Quality of paper, binding, illustrations, and indexing is also considered. Titles are selected from the newest publications received in Majors' warehouse and listed in the Weekly New Book Receipts.
Nicki's Picks has been an extremely popular featured list for Majors. "I find the designation Nicki's Picks quite helpful when deciding to order a title outside of my profile," states Frank Mason of USC Wilson Dental Library in Los Angeles. YBP expects to see a similar reaction from our customers. Explore this new resource and look for Nicki's Picks, starting this month in Academia
Who is Nicki?
Nicki Carter is Director, Library Services & Head, Inside Sales for J.A. Majors Company, which was acquired in September by Baker & Taylor. Nicki joined Majors in 1989 as an Accounts Payable Specialist and was promoted later that year to an Account Specialist in Majors Journals Division. In the 90s, she worked in the Marketing Department and then moved to Library Services as a Bibliographer early in 1998. Nicki was promoted to Approval Plan Manager in December of 1998 and Manager of Library Services in 2001. In 2002, she was made Director of Library Services and in September 2004 was given the added responsibility of Majors' Inside Sales department. Nicki travels to visit customers, seeking to understand their needs so Majors can continue to provide invaluable services to the library marketplace. She served in school and public libraries for six years before joining Majors.
