John Schoenherr, Dead at 74

Ever since John Schoenherr was little, he had a keen interest in drawing and visual art. Beginning at age four he used drawings to help communicate with those in his New York City neighborhood who did not speak his native language of German. As he became older, John’s love of nature became a source of inspiration for his paintings and drawings, even though he flunked nature drawing in college. John was interested in realistic drawings of nature, not creative expression. Around the late 1950s, after attending Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, receiving a Bachelors of Fine Arts, John became involved in science fiction illustration, drawing inspiration from the book Mysterious Island by the famous Jules Verne. He received the Hugo Award for Best Artist at the World Science Fiction Convention in 1965. Quickly becoming an expert in drawing aliens and futuristic scenes, John ended up switching gears and moving to children’s illustrations by the late 1960s after the proprietor whom he worked for passed away. John received the Newbury Award for Illustration for the book Rascal written by Sterling North in 1963. He also won the Randolph Caldecott Medal for his work on Jane Yolen’s Owl Moon in 1987. In later years, John went on to paint for museums and art shows. He died on April 8, 2010 of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
