Shelby Foote (1916-2005)

Novelist and historian Shelby Foote passed away on June 27, 2005 in Memphis, Tennessee. Best known to the general public as the gentle and erudite academic in Ken Burns' PBS documentary "The Civil War," Foote worked for twenty years on his three-volume, 3,000 page history The Civil War: a Narrative. In addition, he published a collection of correspondence between himself and Walker Percy, a lifelong friend; edited a book of short stories by Anton Chekhov for the Modern Library; and wrote six novels over a span of about thirty years.
