While it may seem unusual to call a 565 page collection of 63 articles on librarianship concise, the breadth of the subjects approached in this guidebook could not possibly be covered in any more of an accessible and brief manner. Pulling from expert voices in all aspects of the field, including YBP's own Beverly Geer, Shontz manages to create an invaluable resource for next generation and experienced librarians alike. The subtitle for such a feat could easily be, "Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Librarianship, but Were Afraid to Ask" or even "So Now That I've Got This MLS, What On Earth Do I Do With It".
Akin to getting advice from a collection of excellent, willing mentors, the voices range from humorous to formal, from positive to realistic, and from personal narrative to research-based. The articles begin with profiles of various librarians' careers, followed by advice on education, and then progress into the necessary resume, networking and cover letter advice. It is the last four sections that truly differentiate this book from typical career guidebooks. Covering various facets of job experience and development as an entry level librarian through an experienced librarian, the last four chapters illustrate ways to stay challenged, educated and, most importantly, engrossed in one's job.
A modern guidebook for librarians is a necessity, and the advice provided within these pages serves as important reminders. With all the strides in technology, librarians' careers are changing and expanding, and the opportunities for community are endless. Throughout the book, listserv participation, websites and blogs are mentioned as valuable tools for networking and staying on top of the field. All the authors stress the importance of continuing one's education and suggest considering changing jobs or even fields to rejuvenate before one gets burned out.
The Librarian's Career Guidebook should hold a prominent place on every MLS student's bookshelf, but experienced librarians will want to keep it in reach, as well, for those times when change is calling.
