Developing Around Transit is a collection of case studies that illustrate various issues surrounding transit development. These issues include transit itself, design, development, regulatory environment, market factors and quality of life.
The first chapter is an introduction to the topic that discusses issues and opportunities for integrating transit in development planning. Next the book explores the financial values to adjacent properties when planning development or redevelopment of transit systems and how planning - both local and regional - plays a key role in transit development. It examines successful approaches in urban and suburban environments and looks at the specifics of development around terminal stations - stations that are either at the end of a transit line, or one in which large scale transferring occurs. Using case studies it explores how design can either encourage or discourage development in supporting areas.
The final chapter is based on a workshop held in 2002. It summarizes ten principles for successful development around transit, including 'applying the power of partnerships', 'getting the parking right', 'making accompanying retail development market-driven, not transit-driven', and 'engaging corporate attention'.
This book is recommended for collections specializing in transportation, regional planning, economic development and land use.
