Yuksel Serindag

Yuksel Serindag is the Acquisitions Librarian at Trinity College Library in Hartford, Connecticut, a position he has held since July 2008.
For Yuksel, a career in librarianship was good fortune because he did not initially pursue a career path in library science. After acquiring a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Marburg, Germany, Yuksel was unsure of his next endeavor and took an Editorial Assistant position.
Yuksel's library science career began when he took a job as an Assistant Cataloger at Trinity College Library and was offered the Acquisitions Librarian position when he completed his Master of Science in Library Science from Queens College in Flushing, New York.
The Trinity College Library is an academic library that serves their community of students and faculty members and is located in the Raether Library and Information Technology Center. At this library, patrons have a quiet place to study, access to reference materials in multiple formats and guidance on how to properly select titles for research projects. Library staff relies heavily on their biggest book vendor, YBP Library Services to meet their collection development and acquisition needs. According to Yuksel,"The staff at YBP is very helpful when we have questions regarding library workflow, and in turn we are able to better accommodate our patrons."
Yuksel is responsible for expanding Trinity College Library's print collections, which contain over 900,000 volumes including a large reference collection, the circulating book collection, government documents, bound periodicals and several special collections. This is augmented by a growing number of online resources ranging from citation databases, full-text journals, electronic books, and primary source material, to digital images and music collections.
When not expanding Trinity College Library's collection, Yuskel can be spotted assisting students with locating content needed for research projects, database maintenance and locating missing books. During the past year, Yuksel's most important library-related accomplishment was improving their library's database to give librarians the ability to efficiently view all materials ordered in a respective timeframe.
When asked what Yuksel enjoyed most about being a librarian, he replied, "Being in the sea of knowledge and experiencing and feeling the sharpness and gentleness of knowledge. I mean one is aware of the words changing our world forever."
In response to the future of community college libraries, Yuksel emphasized the importance of his library staying updated on digital books and utilizing social media tools such as Facebook, Twitter and blogs.
When Yuksel is not busy working at the library, you can find him dancing, hiking in Connecticut or staying current with international affairs.
