Springer eBooks
YBP is now selling Springer eBooks through our eReference service. Springer is publishing their entire 2007 output in 12 eBook subject packages. Libraries may purchase one, some, or all of the packages. Springer eBooks are hosted on SpringerLink and integrated with a library's journal content for comprehensive searching. Libraries purchasing 2007 packages by December 31, 2006 receive access to 2005 and 2006 eBooks free of charge.
YBP brings our standard bookselling strengths to Springer eBooks. Libraries purchasing Springer eBooks through YBP can expect excellent coordination with their pBook approval shipments, firm orders, and standing orders. pBook and eBook duplication can be restricted or allowed, whichever the library prefers. GOBI will reflect titles for which a library has eBook access, as well as which packages the library has purchased.
YBP has been pleased to offer Springer pBooks to our customers for many years; now we're ready to provide Springer eBooks as well.
YBP FAQ on Springer eBooks
- Can I buy Springer eBooks singly or must I buy packages?
From Springer, you can only buy packages: one, some, or all 12 of the packages. If you want to purchase individual Springer eBooks, you'll need to buy from one of the aggregators: NetLibrary (which you can buy through YBP), ebrary or EBL.
- Are there advantages to buying a package of titles from Springer instead of single titles from an aggregator?
Yes, many.
- With a one-time purchase of the package, you don't have to keep track of the new titles coming out in a subject area during the year - access will automatically be turned on as soon as they are available.
- Titles are hosted on SpringerLink and integrated with a library's Springer journals and eReference Works for searching.
- Libraries pay one time for an imprint year's titles and have unlimited simultaneous access for all of their users, with unlimited printing, downloading, and copying.
- Libraries own the content, full archiving rights, and can even host it locally if they prefer.
- The cost of a package is cheaper than buying all of the individual titles.
- What's the timing of e versus print?
Titles will appear on SpringerLink slightly before they are published in print. Springer cannot control when individual eBook titles are made available by aggregators.
- Are these eBooks already covered by a license agreement I have in place with Springer?
No, there is a new license agreement for eBooks, and we can provide a generic sample copy if you like. Once you decide to purchase, we'll put you in touch with Springer to negotiate and sign the final license agreement.
- Can I get a better deal by going direct to Springer
? No. Springer has assured us that libraries will pay the same price for eBook packages no matter which vendor they choose to use.
- How is pricing determined?
Pricing is based on matrix of the library's FTEs and research intensity. Also, there is a discount for libraries that buy multiple subject packages..
- I already subscribe to some Springer online Reference works. Will those be included in the eBook packages?
No, online reference works are separate and will continue to attract an annual subscription.
- I already subscribe to some Springer monographic series online. Will those be included in the eBook packages?
Yes, each Springer book series has been assigned to a particular eBook package. Series subscriptions can be rolled into your eBook purchase.
- Why should I buy from YBP rather than Springer or my serials agent?
- YBP has been the source of choice for Springer pBooks and we're ready to be your source for Springer eBooks as well.
- YBP can coordinate your print and electronic purchasing of both monographs and series to allow or prevent duplication, as you prefer.
- We are working on ways to indicate in GOBI which eBook package a particular pBook belongs to, and whether a library subscribes to that package.
We're not ready to commit to a package yet. Can't we wait? Yes, you can wait, but Springer is running an introductory special. Libraries that purchase the 2007 packages by December 31, 2006 will receive the corresponding 2005 and 2006 imprint eBooks for free.
OK, you sold me. Now what? We'll have you work with our eReference department at YBP to sort out the price quote, license agreement, order, and invoicing.
I'm a B&T or Majors customer. Can I buy through them instead? Not yet. For now, all Springer eBooks will be invoiced on a YBP invoice on a YBP account. That's easy to set up though, and I can do that for you, if you like.
Will YBP supply cataloging? Springer makes the MARC records available to libraries via SpringerLink. We are investigating the delivery of those records from YBP.
