Technical Services
YBP offers a range of bibliographic, processing and cataloging services. Hundreds of libraries worldwide
take advantage of these services, and that number increases steadily. Libraries can contract with
YBP for a range of services for bibliographic and cataloging records, binding, and physical processing.
Ordering Support and Electronic Ordering
We recognize that libraries have different needs, preferences and ordering workflows. That's why we
offer tools that enable libraries to submit their orders in a variety of formats, from paper forms
and e-mail, to GOBI3 and local library system EDI. In some cases, YBP may output GOBI3 bibliographic
data to OCLC's WorldCat Selection service or to the library’s local system to allow for selection
and the later transmission of purchase orders. Whatever the local situation, support is available.
YBP also works with the library to ensure that any local information needed for cataloging or
shelfready processing is identified at point of order.
Shipping Records
Some libraries utilize brief MARC shipping records in their workflows. For approval shipments,
these records may serve as a means to create placeholder bibliographic and order records in local
systems. Shipping records may also power MARC-based electronic invoicing. These records are generated
at the time materials are shipped, and can be enhanced with invoice information and other local data,
customizing them to individual libraries' needs. Shipping records are available for subaccounts that
do not receive cataloging support.
Cataloging Support
YBP offers three options for cataloging support for materials purchased from YBP: 1) the YBP
Cataloging Service, 2) OCLC's WorldCat Cataloging Partners (formerly PromptCat) service, and
3) the YBP-OCLC Cataloging Plus service. Order, barcode, invoice, and other local data can
be supplied in any of these types of cataloging records. Depending on the desired service,
various levels of cataloging and completeness can be assured. At least some degree of physical
processing services may be combined with any level of cataloging support. Additionally, YBP's
eBook Cataloging service offers full custom eBook cataloging records of high quality, delivered
at the time that the eBook is invoiced.
Electronic Order Responses/Status Reports
YBP can supply electronic order responses (often utilized as order status reports) in various
delimited and EDI formats, delivered via e-mail or FTP. Depending on the library's local system,
these statuses may be able to be loaded to the system to update open orders, or they may just
replace the printed status reports, which were formerly mailed to customers. An order's current
status is also always accessible in GOBI3, YBP's online system.
Electronic Invoicing
YBP supports electronic invoicing via MARC records as well as numerous EDI formats, and is compatible
with all of the major integrated library systems vendors.
Physical Processing
Libraries turn to YBP for customized processing services. We have clients who receive the full
range of services including shelf-ready books, and others who contract only for a subset – for
example, binding, the application of ownership stamps and barcodes, the production of customized
LC, Dewey, or NLM spine labels, or the supply and insertion of security devices. YBP works with the
library to develop detailed processing specifications and exceptions processing routines, so that we
can deliver a uniform, neatly-processed book every time.
